"The view from the Lake Merritt Boat House is picturesque, with gondolas floating by on the shimmering water. The only problem: No one has been able to see it for 3 years. But that's about to change with the completion of a top-to-bottom renovation of the Mission Revival building.

"The beautiful boathouse remains, and has been restored to its former glory," said Joel Peter, who oversees the use of Measure DD public money for the restoration. His comments came at the Thursday afternoon dedication of the 100-year-old building, which will house the Lake Chalet Seafood Bar and Grill, operated by Lara and Gar Truppelli. The couple also runs the Beach Chalet and Park Chalet, both in San Francisco.

The restoration includes the 1909 boathouse, originally a single-building pump station constructed for the Oakland Fire Department after the 1906 earthquake. With the growing popularity of Lake Merritt, a restaurant, extra wings and a loggia.

Patrons will be able to gaze out of the picture windows from an 80-foot, marble-topped bar overlooking the water, silver and glass globes hang overhead in the restaurant, which is set to open Aug. 17. The Lake Chalet also will include 100-person seating on the deck, near where Servizio Gondola and the Lake Merritt Rowing Club will launch their crafts. "More than anything, it's a great public asset," Gar Truppelli said.

The people that rocked Frisco with the beloved Beach and Park Chalets are about to drop their off-kilter, yet unmistakably awesome follow-up -- meet the Lake Chalet, a 425-seat, multimillion dollar seafood behemoth in Lake Merritt's newly renovated/no-longer-goose-pooped boathouse. The seriously classed-up premises are awash in painted blue wood, blackened steel, mahogany, etc, and're made up of several distinct dining zones including two fireplaced private eating rooms, an 80-foot marble bar that looks out at the lake, and a dockside patio that'll "afford great opportunities to bird watch"...Cali-style grub starts with English pea n' ham hock soup (w/ crispy brussell sprouts/creme fraiche) and crab cakes with popcorn puree, before ramping up to include BBQ baby back ribs, Liberty Farms duck breast w/ roast figs, and ahi in sweet onion gravy w/ mustard greens and beech mushrooms, which make the waves look craaazzyy!
